Flying Closet is a new media sculpture installation involving a series of video work accompanied with home furniture assembled in a human size crate box, transiting through unknown spaces.
It references the reflection of Chan’s feelings that surround the continuing experience of Chan’s transitioning cultural identity between Singapore and Tasmania in her ongoing investigation to explore physical and psychological spaces through new ways of engaging objects and its environment. Inspired by her progressive transitioning experiences, involving her continuous effort in working, applying for work and settling her residency status, Chan constructed this transiting space in which she embodied her affections for her family who are currently residing in Singapore, alongside the challenges she must overcome in living & working in Tasmania. It is a world she sees that she has left and an unknown world that she is entering. Chan shares her emotional journal of struggles, fears, and her desire to reconnect to her beloved family, to create an ongoing source of energy for her to keep striving forward as she loves herself as her family. |

Lines of Attempts is a series of video works featuring Chan in her personalized power suits made out of her sister’s belongings, walking continuously on different public streets where she traverses almost daily to post application in search of a job and to work in her studio.
Chan has transformed these activities into moving lines of energy around the crate box sculpture in Flying Closet, that carries the Skype video conversation between Chan and her sister in Singapore, Skyping Sisters I. |
